Eaton Corporation and the Community Foundation
“Helping Hands: A Series of Community Service Projects for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Programs of Elmira and Corning, New York”
Through the generosity of Eaton Corporation and The Community Foundation, the Big Brothers Big Sisters programs in Elmira and Corning will have the opportunity to feel more connected and accountable toward their community by participating in seven different community service projects. Thus far, “Bigs” and “Littles” have used their creativity to make over 300 various Holiday cards that were delivered to local nursing homes and senior centers, created 100 Easter baskets for children in need, painted, potted, and delivered over 100 flower pots to local nursing homes, repacked 115 emergency food bags for the Corning Meals on Wheels program, and repacked over 540 bags for the Backpack program of the Food bank of the Southern Tier. With each of these fun and exciting completed projects brings a sense of accomplishment and pride amongst our Littles!! Not to mention for all of their hard work, Bigs and Littles will be rewarded with a nice lunch and movie.
The ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes
“An Art Adventure for Children in Corning and Elmira”
With continued support from The ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes, Big Brothers Big Sisters in Elmira and Corning will have the opportunity to participate in various art classes from the area’s top artists. This generous grant has allowed Bigs and Littles to engage in fun and exciting “make it up on the spot” theater with improvisational teacher Camilla Schade, glass fusing and a variety of different visual art projects with artist Chris Adams, a new and exciting world of yoga with Retha Cazel, and ceramics at Earth Paint & Fire Studio with owner Amanda O’Hara.
LEGO Children’s Fund
“Inspiring Creativity through Science”
This science-oriented and education grant will allow matches to engage in a variety of fun and exciting in-house science experiments such as the Mobile Science lab from the Science and Discovery Center, various enrichment classes and a portable star lab from the Ithaca Sciencenter, a trip to the Corning Museum of Glass for the “Fun with Glass program”, and learning about different amphibians, insects, mammals, and birds from Tanglewood Nature Center.
Gannett Foundation
“A Career Quest for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program in Elmira, New York”
The focus of this new program is education and career exploration. This grant will allow for seven career-based education visits (such as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, teacher, veterinarian, and media professional), three on site-career oriented training programs, a four hour visit from the Science and Discovery Center Mobile Science lab, and six weeks of real time business training from Junior Achievement. Through our “Career Quest” program, we hope to further expand the hopes and dreams of the Littles in our program by exposing them to a wide variety of career education. An exhilarating program that Bigs and Littles can explore together!
Community Foundation
“Creativity Curriculum”
With continued support from the Community Foundation, the Corning and Elmira Big Brothers Big Sisters programs will offer matches the opportunity to experience exciting and creative classes such as making polymer clay beads, learning the different techniques of hip hop dance, and yoga!
