The ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes
“An Art Adventure for Children in Corning and Elmira”
With continued support from The ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes, Big Brothers Big Sisters in Elmira and Corning will have the opportunity to participate in various art classes from the area’s top artists. This generous grant has allowed Bigs and Littles to engage in fun and exciting “make it up on the spot” theater with improvisational teacher Camilla Schade, glass fusing and a variety of different visual art projects with artist Chris Adams, a new and exciting world of yoga with Retha Cazel, and ceramics at Earth Paint & Fire Studio with owner Amanda O’Hara.

“Healthy Living 101”
The Elmira Big Brothers Big Sisters Program will engage in a week of educational training in the areas of: health, nutrition, cooking and exercise. This will include 6 cooking/nutrition classes, 3 sports/recreation classes, 3 tennis clinics, 3 yoga classes, a variety of recreational/sports equipment, and 25 weeks of healthy snacks

“A Career Quest for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program in Elmira, New York”
The focus of this new program is education and career exploration. This grant will allow for seven career-based education visits (such as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, teacher, veterinarian, and media professional), three on site-career oriented training programs, a four hour visit from the Science and Discovery Center Mobile Science lab, and six weeks of real time business training from Junior Achievement. Through our “Career Quest” program, we hope to further expand the hopes and dreams of the Littles in our program by exposing them to a wide variety of career education. An exhilarating program that Bigs and Littles can explore together!

“Creativity Curriculum”
With continued support from the Community Foundation, the Corning and Elmira Big Brothers Big Sisters programs will offer matches the opportunity to experience exciting and creative classes such as making polymer clay beads, learning the different techniques of hip hop dance, and yoga!
John G. Ullman & Associates Foundation
“Educational Enrichment for over 100 Underprivileged Children in Corning"
Through the generosity of John G. Ullman & Associates, 110 children participating in programs offered from Family Service Society, Inc. (Big Brothers Big Sisters, Corning Area Youth Center, and the Advantage After school program )will have the opportunity to engage in educational activities such as on-site classes from the Science and Discovery Center, a visit from the Ithaca Sciencenter's portable star lab planetarium, exploration on the Science and Discovery mobile science lab, and educational classes from Junior Achievement. To top off this amazing opportunity, each program will also be able to purchase school supplies for each child participating in these programs during the 2010-2011 school year!
